The new battery rebate update 2025 is already making waves. In just the first month since launching, over 19,000 Australians have taken advantage of the rebate to install solar battery storage in their homes.
According to the Clean Energy Regulator (CER), 19,592 battery installations were approved in July alone, adding over 344.1 MWh of storage capacity to our distributed energy network. It’s a sign that homeowners are ready to take energy into their own hands, and that the rebate is working.
What’s changed?
Launched on 1 July 2025, the updated rebate offers around 30% off the cost of a solar battery when installed with a new or existing rooftop solar system. It’s part of the expanded Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), aimed at encouraging more households to adopt clean energy storage.
The average battery size installed in July was 18.2 kWh, giving households more stored energy for night-time use, blackouts, or selling back to the grid.
Why are batteries suddenly so popular?
-
Financial incentives: The rebate reduces upfront costs significantly.
-
Energy independence: Store your own energy and reduce reliance on the grid.
-
Community impact: More batteries help stabilise supply and reduce demand peaks, lowering power prices for everyone.
As Carl Binning from the CER explains:
An increase in solar batteries across Australia benefits the householder and reduces supply and demand across the whole electricity grid.
Is it safe?
Yes. The CER has already launched a compliance inspection program to ensure all installations under the rebate meet national safety standards. Findings will be shared with regulators and solar accreditation bodies to ensure industry-wide accountability.
What’s next?
-
Postcode-level data will be released monthly starting mid-August.
-
Some STC processing delays are expected due to high demand.
-
More accurate historical installation data is also available via AEMO’s Distributed Energy Resource Register.
Should I apply now?
If you’re considering battery storage, now is the time. With the rebate live and interest growing, installing a battery in 2025 could be the smartest energy decision you make.
