How It Works

What to Know Before You Buy

August 13, 2025

Thinking about going solar but not sure where to start? Our solar buyer’s checklist is designed to walk you through the key things you need to consider before installing a solar system. Whether you’re planning a new build or retrofitting your current home, this guide will help tell you what to know before you buy solar!

1. Understand Your Energy Needs

Start by reviewing your current electricity bills. How much energy do you use daily? What are your peak usage times? This will help size your system and determine if battery storage is worthwhile.

2. Get a Roof Assessment

Not every roof is created equal. The angle, orientation, shade, and available space will all affect your solar output. A good installer will assess your roof and recommend a system that works for it — not the other way around.

3. Know the Components

You’re not just buying panels. Your solar system will include:

  • Solar panels (monocrystalline or polycrystalline)

  • Inverter (string, micro, or hybrid)

  • Optional battery storage

  • Mounting system
Understand what each part does, and what brands or models are being quoted.

4. Compare Quotes, and What’s In Them

Look beyond the price. Does the quote include:

  • System design and sizing?

  • Permits and applications?

  • Monitoring setup?

  • Warranty info?
Make sure you’re comparing apples with apples.

5. Ask About Warranties

You’ll want both:

  • Performance warranties (usually 25 years for panels)

  • Product warranties (10–15 years for inverters and workmanship)

6. Choose an Accredited Installer

Always use a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited installer. This ensures your system meets Australian standards and is eligible for government rebates or certificates.

7. Check for Rebates & Incentives

From federal STCs to state-based rebates and schemes, there’s often money on the table — but it changes. A good installer will help you claim what you’re eligible for.

8. Think Long-Term

Solar is a long-term investment. Ask yourself:

  • Will you be in this house for 5+ years?

  • Could you benefit from a battery now or later?

  • Are your energy needs likely to grow (e.g. EV, growing family)?
