Labor Home Battery Subsidy Update

May 6, 2025

Big Energy Shifts Are Coming : Here’s What You Need to Know

The home battery subsidy Australia has been waiting for is finally on its way.  Following Labor’s re-election, the federal government is moving ahead with a major push to make energy cleaner, more affordable, and more accessible for Australian households and small businesses. One of the key pillars? Battery support  and lots of it.

With over $2.3 billion committed to help fund one million home batteries, it’s a big moment for those who already have solar and those thinking about getting started.

  1. Battery Support Is Coming

Battery storage has always been a game-changer for solar users — helping households store excess power generated during the day to use at night (when electricity prices are often highest).

But up until now, the upfront cost of batteries has made them out of reach for many Australians. That’s about to change.

Labor’s re-election confirms a rollout of battery subsidies, aiming to reduce installation costs by up to 30%, saving households around $4,000 on a typical battery.

While an exact start date for the subsidy rollout hasn’t been confirmed, the program is officially underway and expected to begin ramping up this year.

  1. Direct Energy Bill Relief from July 1

Alongside the battery plan, the government is offering an extra $150 in energy bill relief to every household and around one million small businesses, starting July 1.

This is part of a broader cost-of-living package designed to ease pressure while renewable infrastructure scales up.

  1. How Much Could You Save?

According to analysis by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water:

  • If you already have solar and add a battery, you could save up to $1,100 per year on your power bills.
  • If you install both solar and a battery now, your household could save up to $2,300 per year  that’s up to 90% off a typical electricity bill.

  1. Solar Is Common, Batteries Aren’t (Yet)

There are now four million rooftop solar installations across Australia. One in three homes is powered, at least in part, by the sun.

But only one in 40 households has a battery.

This new plan is designed to close that gap and help more Australians get the most from their solar systems.

  1. What About Other Energy Upgrades?

Labor’s energy plan also includes:

  • $1 billion Household Energy Upgrades Fund to help homes install energy-efficient appliances and improvements
$800 million Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative to support lower-income households
$100 million Community Energy Upgrades Fund for public facilities like libraries and sports centres

What’s Next?

If you already have solar, this is a great time to explore battery options.

If you’re considering solar, this home battery subsidy in Australia could significantly lower your upfront costs.
