How It Works

Do I need a battery with my solar system?

June 27, 2025

As more Australians make the switch to solar, one key question keeps coming up: “Do I need a battery with my solar system?” While solar panels alone can reduce your electricity bills and your reliance on the grid, adding a battery can offer even greater energy independence and flexibility. But a battery isn’t right for everyone, so how do you know if it’s worth it?

How a Solar System Works Without a Battery

When you install solar panels, they generate electricity during the day. Your home uses that power in real-time. If there’s excess energy, it’s sent back to the grid, and you receive a feed-in tariff in return, typically a small credit on your bill.

At night, when the sun isn’t shining, your solar panels stop producing. That means you draw electricity from the grid like usual. So while solar panels help reduce your bills, they don’t make you entirely independent, especially in the evenings or during blackouts.

What a Battery Actually Does

A battery stores the excess energy your panels produce during the day. Instead of exporting it to the grid, you keep it on-site and use it when you need it, like in the evening or during an outage.

This allows you to make better use of the power you’ve generated. You rely less on the grid, reduce exposure to rising energy prices, and potentially have backup power during a blackout (depending on your setup).

So… Do You Need a Battery?

Not necessarily, it depends on your household’s energy usage, budget, and goals.

If you’re home during the day and using most of the power your system produces, a battery might not save you much more. You’re already making good use of your solar without storing it. But if you’re out all day and using most of your electricity in the evening, a battery can help shift your solar usage to when you actually need it.

You might also consider a battery if:

  • You want protection during blackouts

  • You’re planning to buy an electric vehicle

  • You want to future-proof your home against rising energy prices or new time-of-use tariffs

On the other hand, if your main goal is fast payback and your budget is tight, starting with panels only might be the way to go and you can always add a battery later.

At Limitless Energy Solutions, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. Whether you’re ready to go all in, or just want to start with panels and explore batteries later, we’ll give you clear, honest advice, no pressure.
